THE CRAVING IS REAL

Deep-fried onion rings

Measured salt and a homemade dip can reduce sodium compared with some prepared rings and sauces. The benefit depends on the breadcrumbs and ketchup you choose.

What you’ll need

Ingredients

Let’s do this

  1. 1

Heat the oven to 425°F and line a large tray. Peel the onion, cut into 1/2-inch slices, and separate into rings. Save the tiny centers for another dish.

  2. 2

Put flour in one bowl. Beat egg and water in a second. Mix panko, oil, paprika, and salt in a third.

  3. 3

Coat each ring lightly in flour, then egg, then crumbs, pressing to help them stick. Arrange in one layer with space around each ring.

  4. 4

Bake for 18–22 minutes, flipping gently halfway, until golden and the onion is tender. Do not taste the uncooked coating.

  5. 5

Mix yogurt, ketchup, and garlic powder in a clean bowl. Serve the rings hot with dip on the side.
